Pediatric and Adolescent Orthopedic Fellowship

Why Washington University Orthopedics?

Thank you for considering Washington University for your fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedics. We believe there are many reasons to choose Washington University for your fellowship training. As one of the nation’s leading academic institutions, Washington University School of Medicine has always been committed to excellence in patient care, education, and research. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Orthopedic Surgery at Washington University also have a longstanding international reputation for excellence in patient care, education, and research. The fellowship is based at two outstanding pediatric hospitals — Saint Louis Children's Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children–St. Louis — each with different strengths and different patient populations. Below are only some of the many reasons why you should consider Washington University for your fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedics.

  1. Operative experience: Each of our fellows participate in 600-700 surgical procedures during their fellowship year. In addition to the large volume, these surgical procedures are typically complex and provide fellows with an outstanding operative experience. Our pediatric orthopedic faculty all have a subspecialty practice and fellows will learn the latest techniques from the experts who write and teach in these domains.
  2. Outpatient experience: We have numerous attending driven outpatient clinics with both subspecialty patients and general pediatric orthopedic patients (fractures, etc).  We have one of the busiest clubfoot and vertical talus programs in the nation and fellows will be able to understand the techniques of non-operative management of those conditions. Participation multi-disciplinary clinics for children with variety of chronic conditions is also one of the unique aspects of our fellowship program.  The fact that our fellowship is based on two different pediatric hospitals generate even more variety in our clinics and operating rooms.
  3. Academic and research opportunity: Our faculty are national leaders in their subspecialties and are involved in numerous basic science and clinical research projects. There are ample opportunities for interested fellows to be involved in research.
  4. Didactic curriculum: We provided a robust and comprehensive didactic curriculum for the education of our pediatric orthopedic fellows. This includes weekly conferences, indications conferences, regular journal clubs, and a rotating, weekly attending- provided lecture.

In summary, we believe our fellowship training provides everything you need to become an outstanding pediatric orthopedic surgeon. We believe our strengths include our dedicated faculty, our high patient volume in the clinic and operating rooms, our two hospitals, and our commitment to education and research.
