Trauma Experience

St. Louis Children’s Hospital is a busy Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. The fellows are active in the perioperative management of pediatric trauma patients, including the evaluation of appropriate closed treatment of fractures. Fellows are expected to play an important role in the education of orthopaedic residents and medical students in operative and non-operative management of pediatric fractures. The fellows will be exposed to the management of complex peri-articular fractures and pelvic trauma in pediatric patients, working with St. Louis Children's Hospital attending staff as well as adult traumatologists at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

In the final six months of fellowship, the fellows are given the opportunity to take primary attending trauma call, with staff attending back-up. This opportunity allows for the fellow to develop surgical and decision-making independence in a protected setting. By the conclusion of fellowship year, the fellow should expect to be proficient at the independent management of common pediatric musculoskeletal trauma.
