Background
Dr. Lawrence Lenke is the Jerome J. Gilden endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and holds the positions of Co-Chief, Adult/Pediatric Scoliosis and Reconstructive Spinal Surgery and Chief, Spinal Surgery at Shriners Hospital - St. Louis Unit. Dr. Lenke’s practice is devoted to spinal surgery with an emphasis on complex reconstructive surgery and treatment of various spinal deformities such as scoliosis. He operates weekly at St. Louis Shriners Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
After receiving his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School, Dr. Lenke completed his internship and residency training at Washington University School of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery. Also, while at Washington University, he completed fellowship training in pediatric and adult spinal surgery. In 1994 and again in 2004, Dr. Lenke received board certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Lenke is an active member of numerous professional societies: the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, American Orthopaedic Association, the American Spine Society, and the Scoliosis Research Society, in addition to many more.
As an author, Dr. Lenke has contributed over 75 chapters to medical textbooks, more than 210 articles to scientific peer-reviewed journals, and over 70 non-peer-reviewed/invited articles. He also serves as an editor for textbooks and scientific journals, including the recently published textbook, Spinal Deformity: A Guide to Surgical Planning and Management.
He has presided as chair to over 50 professional spinal surgery meetings worldwide and is the chairman of IMAST (International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques) until 2009 for which he has authored/coauthored over 510 scientific abstracts/presentations. He has been an invited lecturer over 200 times and has accepted 55 visiting professorships. He has also participated in two prestigious International Traveling Fellowships in the field of spinal surgery.
