Clinical Interests
Expertise in the evaluation and treatment of all types of adult and adolescent foot and ankle disorder, especially those resulting from trauma, arthritis, neuromuscular disease, congenital deformity, flatfoot deformities, rheumatoid arthritis, hallux valgus, ankle arthroscopy, and foot complications of diabetes. Special interest in extra corporeal shockwave treatment (ESWT) for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Research interests include ESWT, treatment of foot drop, hallux rigidus, diabetic foot complications.
Background
As an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Johnson served an internship at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco. He then practiced Family Medicine in Sandstone, Minnesota. He served an orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in his hometown of Rochester, Minnesota. Following residency, he was a fellow in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Texas, Houston, under the direction of Donald E. Baxter, M.D. He entered private orthopaedic practice in Milwaukee before joining the full-time faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In 1989 he was appointed director of the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program which graduates four fellows per year. Dr. Johnson joined the Washington University faculty at his current position in 1997.
