Our program is consistently regarded as a top training program in the nation by US News & World Report and Doximity, and we pride ourselves on developing an education program that prioritizes resident training.
Throughout their five years here, our residents develop skills that allow them to provide highly-proficient, compassionate care for all patients. The Washington University Medical Campus provides a unique blend of both basic and complex patient referrals, and is a major Level I trauma center in a busy urban environment.
We are committed to leading the field of orthopaedic surgery with regards to patient care, education, research (currently #3 in NIH funding!) and development of future leaders.

Through the basic science, clinical and translational research efforts of our faculty, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine ranks among the top orthopedic departments in the nation in terms of current NIH funding.
Participants in our residency training program benefit from:
- A faculty-driven CORE Curriculum, designed for a new generation of orthopedic surgeons. It features a two year cycle of subspecialty lectures highlighting the basics of orthopedics, and dedicated supplemental reading lists for all subspecialties.
- Didactics are complemented with case-based, interactive learning experiences that include weekly educational lectures, grand rounds and interactive conferences, subspecialty conferences, monthly journal clubs, psychomotor skills and cadaveric anatomy sessions. - A full-time faculty of attending physicians and researchers representing all ten subspecialties of orthopaedics is committed to and actively involved in resident education.
- Videoconferencing of all educational conferences allows the department to simultaneously broadcast weekly conferences and lectures to all clinical locations.
- A robust Residency Research Program has been developed to provide enhanced opportunities for residents. The project includes semi-annual lectures, a thesis project to be completed by graduation and the option of an additional resident research year.
- Through our sports team affiliations, our sports medicine specialists are active in the medical care of Washington University athletes as well as professional athletes and teams, including the St. Louis Blues.
- A graduated learning philosophy that emphasizes individualized advancement, progressive mastery of surgical skills, full understanding and development of the six general competencies and independent thinking.
- A broad scope of patient-care settings provides high-volume and broad variety of clinical experience including trauma, reconstructive surgeries, and complex and unusual clinical challenges.
