The Trauma Service for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery staffs the Emergency Rooms at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The PGY-1, PGY-2 or PGY-3 Resident on-call performs the initial consult with patients who present with traumatic upper extremity injuries. While Fellows are called down infrequently to the emergency room as the initial consultant for minor surgery procedures such as nail bed repair or minor wound care during on-call hours, the junior Resident and Chief Resident on the Hand Service will at times seek advice or input from the Hand Fellow on call with regard to the management of patients seen in the emergency room. Fellows are called by the Residents for all cases that go to the operating room.
Fellows take emergency at-home call coverage at Barnes-Jewish & Children’s Hospitals on even-numbered days only. The total call responsibility for any orthopaedic Hand Surgical Fellow is therefore 1 in 4 at-home call. Normal ACGME requirements are adhered to.
Fellows alternate weekend call coverage. Each Fellow is provided with two weekends per month completely free of call coverage.
