John Clohisy Jr., MD, orthopedic spine surgeon, joined forces with Zack Ray, MD, neurosurgeon, on the first robotic-assisted integrated spine surgery at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.
The procedure combines the specialized expertise of orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and advanced spine technology. Dr. Clohisy explains, “This variety of training backgrounds, clinical expertise, and integrated approach allows us to work together to ensure that our patients have the best possible outcomes.”
While tried and true surgical techniques are still a great option, in some cases robotic assistance has benefits. Dr. Clohisy shares, “Robotics and computer navigation are game-changing technologies for minimally invasive spine surgery. These tools allow the surgeon to plan exactly where implants will be placed using a patient's imaging studies prior to surgery and then execute the plan with precision and accuracy through very small incisions. This means safer and less invasive surgery, faster recovery, and less radiation exposure to the patient and surgical team. It is very exciting that we now offer our patients these technologies at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.”
