Whole-food Plant-based Nutritional Counseling

A whole-food plant-based (WFPB) diet is a lifestyle that emphasizes the inclusion of minimally processed, whole plant foods while minimizing the intake of processed and animal derived foods.

Studies have shown that a plant-based diet is more sustainable and offers more long-term health benefits than traditional or popular fad” diets. To offer our patients an evidence-based approach to a healthier lifestyle using food as medicine, we offer plant-based nutritional counseling at the Living Well Center® for weight loss and disease management.

Benefits of plant-based eating

A WFPB diet eating can be helpful in preventing or treating cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, autoimmune diseases, and weight loss.

“Lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are on the rise as the Standard American Diet has come to consist of mostly processed foods that are high in sugar and fat,” Scott Stoll, MD, The Power of the Plate.

When transitioning from a Standard American Diet to a plant-based eating regimen, many positive changes begin to take shape within the body. Patients may notice improved insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improved digestion/gut health, better sleep, less joint pain and inflammation within the body, weight loss, and increased energy and stamina.

Adapting to a whole-food plant-based lifestyle with nutritional counseling

Our nutritional counseling sessions offer many resources to help patients transition to a whole-food plant-based diet. Sessions are held one-on-one with our registered dietitian, virtually or in-person at the Living Well Center. You’ll learn about what foods to eat and those to avoid, how to meal plan and prep, receive recipes, grocery shopping guides, tips for eating out, and other resources to make your new plant-based journey a success. Our patients also have the benefit of utilizing the Living Well Center’s state-of-the-art test kitchen during their appointments to learn how to prepare recipes at home.*

Because a healthy diet is only one aspect of mind and body wellness, the Living Well Center offers many additional services for improved health.

Nutritional counseling FAQs

Does insurance cover nutritional counseling?
Some insurances do cover nutritional counseling; however, we encourage you to check with your insurance carrier prior to scheduling an appointment.

Do patients need a referral?
The Living Well Center does not require a physician referral to schedule a nutritional counseling appointment, but some insurances do. Please check with your insurance carrier prior to contacting us for an appointment.

How many nutritional counseling sessions will I need?
On average, our patients visit us for three nutritional counseling sessions before they continue a plant-based eating journey on their own. However, the frequency of appointments is different for everyone, and is based on each individual’s medical conditions and health goals. Sometimes, patients only need one nutritional counseling visit to get started.

Do you offer a more comprehensive program for weight management?
Yes! We offer a 10-week (five class) virtual group weight loss program for patients who are looking for additional support and guidance.
