Arthrogryposis Center

Arthrogryposis is a term used to describe a number of rare conditions characterized by stiff joints and abnormally developed muscles. Children diagnosed with arthrogryposis benefit from different treatment options that are based on the age, level of function, and the degree of joint contractures. The Washington University Orthopedics Arthrogryposis Center is the only center in the area that provides a unique service for children with arthrogryposis. Our center offers individualized treatment plans that are designed by our multi-disciplinary team of experts for optimal clinical outcomes.

Commonly Treated Conditions Associated with Arthrogryposis:

  • Clubfeet
  • Dislocated hips
  • Hand contractures
  • Internally rotated shoulder and limbs
  • Muscle absence or atrophy
  • Scoliosis
  • Webbed and/or dimpled skin

Collaborative Treatment Approach

The Washington University Orthopedics Arthrogryposis Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital provides a multi-disciplinary individualized team approach for children with arthrogryposis. Through the collaboration of our expert Washington University Orthopedic physicians and the experienced therapists at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, we are able to offer a unique service for arthrogryposis patients and optimize their care. 

Upper Extremity
Occupational therapists and pediatric upper extremity surgeons thoroughly evaluate each patient to determine the best treatment plan for the upper extremities, specifically elbows, wrists, and hand. Bracing, casting, occupational therapy, or surgical treatment could be recommended.

Lower Extremity
Our physical therapists and pediatric orthopedic surgeons provide a comprehensive evaluation of lower extremity contractures including hip, knee, and feet involvement and design individualized plans for each patient. Physical therapy, casting, bracing, or surgical treatment could be recommended.
