Dr. Ricci specializes in the management fractures and complications resulting from fractures. He treats acute fractures of the arm, leg and pelvis, as well as fracture nonunions (unhealed fractures), malunions (incorrectly healed fractures) and osteomyelitis (bone infections). Dr. Ricci has particular interest and expertise in treating; fractures near joints including shoulder (proximal humerus and clavicle) fractures, elbow fractures (distal humerus, olecranon, and radial head), hip fractures (acetabulum, femoral head and neck, intertrochanteric, and subtrochanteric), knee fractures (patella, distal femur, tibial plateau), and ankle and foot fractures (pilon and calcaneous); management of post-traumatic problems including nonunions, malunions, and osteomyelitis; management of periprosthetic fractures adjacent to prior total hip and total knee replacements; and management of fractures related to the use of bisphosphonates (such as Fosemax).

Background

Dr. Ricci has developed a national and international recognition as a leader in the field of orthopaedics. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and over 50 book chapters, chaired multiple national and international orthopaedic trauma meetings and courses, was an American-British-Canadian travelling fellow, and is an editor of Rockwood and Greens Textbook of Fractures in Adults.  Dr. Ricci serves on the board of several scholarly journals including the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and has served on the board of directors of major orthopaedic organizations including the American Orthopaedic Association and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

Dr. Ricci received his undergraduate degree in biomechanical engineering and his medical degree from Duke University. He completed residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery/New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York city. Dr. Ricci spent an additional year studying orthopaedic trauma as a fellow at Tampa General Hospital and the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. He then joined the Washington University Faculty in 1998.
