Meet Meghan Flynn, PA

Where are you from? 

I grew up in St. Charles, and then completed my undergraduate degree and PA school at St. Louis University. I love the St. Louis area and feel fortunate to have so many family members here.

What made you choose orthopedics as a specialty? 

I was active in sports growing up and unfortunately sustained some orthopedic injuries. Being treated by orthopedic surgeons and PAs first got me interested in the field. When I was graduating from PA school, I was leaning toward orthopedics or emergency medicine. While the ER was exhilarating, I disliked that I usually didn't get to know what happened to the patient after they left. With orthopedics, I get to follow the patient from their initial evaluation, through conservative treatment, surgery, and recovery. I feel like we really get to know the patient and build a relationship with them. I also enjoy the hands-on aspect of doing injections and assisting in surgery.

What brought you to WashU Medicine Orthopedics? 

I worked in private orthopedic practice for 16 years prior to coming to WashU Medicine. As my children got older and busier with their activities, I was looking for a position closer to home. WashU Medicine Orthopedics has such an incredible reputation for outstanding orthopedic care and innovation, and is somewhere I had always hoped to work one day. When the opportunity arose to work with Dr. Nunley on the Joint Reconstruction team, it was an easy choice.

What aspect of your practice do you find most interesting or rewarding? 

When people are suffering from severe hip or knee osteoarthritis, they are often very debilitated and having trouble doing their basic daily activities, like going down the stairs or walking to the mailbox. It is extremely rewarding to see how much their quality of life improves from our treatments, whether it be a cortisone injection or a total joint replacement. When a patient tells you that you helped give them their life back, that feels really good.

What is the best advice you ever received? 

"You never know what someone is going through, so always be kind." I cannot recall who gave me that advice, or if I read it somewhere, but it resonated with me. Many people are dealing with things in their personal life that we may never know about, so it's best to treat everyone with kindness. 

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? 

Outside of work, I enjoy coaching and watching my kids play sports. They keep me busy! As a family, we enjoy watching sporting events, especially the Blues, Cardinals, and SLU and Mizzou's sports teams. I also love anything outdoors, working in my garden, and reading.

If you weren't in medicine, what would you like to be doing? 

I would probably be an accountant. I've always loved math and crunching numbers.
