Meet Joseph Sweet, PA, ATC
Joe specializes in the evaluation and treatment of foot and ankle conditions, including foot and toe fractures, heel pain, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains and non-surgical management of flat feet.
Where are you from?

I am from Lowell, Michigan (outside of Grand Rapids, MI). But I currently live in Edwardsville, IL with my wife, two kids, and our dog.
What made you choose orthopedics as a specialty?
I was a college athlete and originally went to school and practiced as an Athletic Trainer. I really enjoy helping people recover from their injuries and ailments and getting them back doing the things they love.
What brought you to WashU Medicine Orthopedics?
I previously worked with the foot and ankle team, with Dr. Backus, as an Athletic Trainer for four years. When I learned about the opportunity to come back and join the team, there was no hesitation. The foot and ankle team are an incredibly group of people to work with who are kind, passionate, and fun to be around.
What aspect of your practice do you find most interesting or rewarding?
Getting someone back on their feet. Seeing people get back to doing what the enjoy whether that is sports, going for walks, or just being able to get outside to enjoy the sun. It doesn’t matter what their activity level is, getting them back to what makes them happy is why I chose to do this.
What is the best advice you ever received?
Smile. As a kid, my father would always remind me to smile regardless of if I was having a bad or good day. You never know who you’re going to meet or run in to and a smile can make all the difference. It not only can make you feel better, but also impact those around you.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Anything outdoors. Hiking, backpacking, just being outside with my kids, and walking my dog, Finn. My two-year-old keeps me busy running around, biking, or just playing in water. I also enjoy playing soccer when possible.
If you weren't in medicine, what would you like to be doing?
Teaching. I enjoy the patient education aspect as this job. Knowledge is power and I feel that its important. I believe that patients who understand their condition and how to treat it have better outcomes. I also spent a year teaching at SEMO Athletic Training program which I enjoyed, however, I think educators are best once they have had experience, so I decided to go back to practicing.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I have two daughters, a two-year-old and a four-month-old, and a golden retriever named Finn who keep me busy. I enjoy talking and watching all sports.
