Meet Grace Garrett

Nurse Practitioner

Grace is a nurse practitioner specializing in the the nonoperative care of patients with chronic or acute hip or knee pain and the management of diseases that affect the bone, joint and soft tissue, such as osteoarthritis. Grace also provides post-operative care for patients who have had a hip or knee replacement.

Where are you from?

I’ve lived most of my life in Washington, Missouri. I lived in Florida as a younger child and think of both as home.

What made you choose orthopedics as specialty?

I’ve always been drawn to the mechanics of the human body—how structure and movement are so closely tied to quality of life. Orthopedics offers the perfect blend of problem-solving, hands-on treatment, and the ability to see real, tangible outcomes in patients’ lives.

What brought you to WashU Medicine Orthopedics?

WashU Medicine Orthopedics has a national reputation for excellence, innovation, and collaboration. The opportunity to work alongside such talented and driven colleagues, while being part of an academic environment that values both patient care and research, made it an easy choice.

What aspect of your work do you find most interesting or rewarding?

The most rewarding part of my work is helping patients regain function and return to the activities they love—whether that’s walking without pain, playing sports again, or simply living without discomfort. That transformation is incredibly fulfilling.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, playing with our two golden doodles – Ozzie and Sunny, and listening to music, which helps me recharge and stay balanced. My work is so physical, I must stay active and lift weights, so you will find me in our local gym most days a week. I also love spending quality time with family and friends.

What's the best advice you ever received?

"Listen more than you speak." It’s a simple but powerful reminder—especially in medicine—that understanding someone fully starts with truly hearing them.

If you weren't in healthcare, what would you like to be doing?

While I’ve built a rewarding career in healthcare, my curiosity and passion for the world extend far beyond the clinic. If I weren’t in healthcare, you’d probably find me with a passport in one hand and a camera in the other—traveling the globe, soaking in new cultures, and learning as many languages as I could along the way.

I’m drawn to storytelling in all its forms, whether through the lens of photography, the written word, or the power of teaching. I imagine myself writing children’s books that spark imagination and empathy, educating young minds, and encouraging curiosity through playful narratives and creative learning.

An athlete at heart, I find joy in movement, challenge, and the discipline of sport. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or halfway across the world, I’m constantly seeking growth, connection, and the chance to inspire others to live boldly and learn endlessly.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I love to travel and explore new cultures whenever I get the chance. At home, I enjoy life with my big, wonderful family, who keep me grounded and constantly remind me of what really matters.
