December 01, 2025

Dr. Obey skiingSki trips are fun winter getaways. Mitch Obey, MD, is a trauma surgeon and slopes enthusiast. He shares some safety tips for any ski or snowboarding excursion:

  • Check your equipment each morning before riding to ensure it functions properly.
  • Stay warm, wear layers, and check weather conditions before heading out.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Stay in control and prevent collisions. Do not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.
  • Follow trail signs and avoid closed areas.
  • Protect your head, protect your eyes, and protect your skin. Yes, that means wear a helmet!
  • Know how to contact Ski Patrol in the event of an emergency.
  • Have fun and keep those tips up!
