Meet Kate Dennis
Billing and Scheduling Assistant
Where are you from?
I am from Festus, MO. This is a small-ish hometown so nothing too interesting has happened here.
What brought you to WashU Medicine Orthopedics?
It had always been a dream of mine to work for such a prestigious organization. Washington University has helped so many of my family and friends. I was also a patient myself and was always told by staff what an amazing place it was to work. I am very fortunate to now be able to confirm that is really is the best place to work.
How do you support the department?
I am an insurance specialist for the orthopedic surgery department. I work to verify insurances to assure that patients are in network and to obtain any referrals or out of network authorizations to help reduce financial burdens on patients and to assure services are paid for by insurance companies.
What aspect of your work do you find most interesting and rewarding?
To be able to serve as an advocate for patients to assure their appointments, surgeries, and procedures are taken care of prior to being seen. Insurance can be complicated to work through at times, so I love that I can take some of the burden off the patient so they can focus on themselves/loved ones without having to worry much about insurance coverage or large bills.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Spending time with my little family.
What's the best advice you ever received?
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.
If you weren't in healthcare, what would you like to be doing?
I would love to own my own coffee shop.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I married my high school sweetheart, and we have been together a total of 13 years in which four of those we have been married. We welcomed our miracle baby in July of 2023 and owe so much to WashU as we received the best IVF treatment and financial support to start our family. We will forever be grateful for Washington University and all it has done and continues to do for our family.
