Meet Kelly Garey

Medical Assistant

Where are you from?

I'm from St. Louis, MO. The Arch is definitely something to explore here. Not only being able to travel to the top, but the museum of historical facts that you can visit as well.

What brought you to WashU Medicine Orthopedics?

Due to the pandemic, I was let go from my previous job of Accounting Manager at the Enterprise Center. In my job search, a friend told me about the Entrance Screener position at WashU, and I started here in 2020. I was offered the chance to return to my old job after Covid restrictions were lifted, but I'd already made the decision to stay at WashU. I was peaceful here. So, I went through the MA program at WashU, as this is what I had a degree in originally. Now I'm an MA III and I'm loving it!

How do you support the department?

I support the department by patient facing first and foremost. Taking vitals, rooming patients, assisting in injection setups. I'm also responsible for supply inventory, toxin ordering, and resident rotation scheduling, amongst other tasks.

What aspect of your work do you find most interesting and rewarding?

In Neuro Rehab, it's interesting to meet and learn all about the different patients we see and help. It's rewarding seeing and being a part of their recovery process. To see their progression after the help of our providers is amazing!

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

My favorite things to do are spending time with my three daughters (pictured above as completed our second 5k for Girls On the Run) reading, going to the movies, and trying new and different restaurants.

What's the best advice you ever received?

The best advice I've ever received was to stay kind and positive. Things are not always perfect, but you can determine the outcome of many situations by your reactions.

If you weren't in healthcare, what would you like to be doing?

If I wasn't in healthcare, I would go back to accounting – working with numbers interest me.
