Meet Abigail Grove

Orthopedic Technician

Where are you from?

I’m from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

What brought you to Washington University Orthopedics?

After graduating from Western Michigan University in 2020, I decided to move to St. Louis because I was ready for a bigger city, and I had interest in the schools in the area for graduate school. I found my way to Washington University Orthopedics through my interest in the field and I thought what better way to find out than working with pediatric patients!

How do you support the department?

I am an orthopedic technician and am often collaborating with physicians to cast patients, apply splints, remove casts, sutures, pins, assisting with all the physical equipment and bandages that you would see an orthopedic patient wearing.

What aspect of your work do you find most interesting or rewarding?

The most rewarding part of my position is seeing the change I'm making, whether that’s emotional support, giving relief from pain by immobilizing or the opposite and giving freedom back after immobilization and healing.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Outside of work you can find me at my local CrossFit gym training or coaching, CrossFitGBT! I absolutely love the community we have built, and it has helped me grow individually to better myself and those around me! I also love to travel, avid Avalanche hockey fan and have my hands full with two golden-doodle puppies that just turned 1!

What's the best advice you ever received?

”Negativity is contagious. Unhappiness is contagious. Fear is contagious. But so is optimism. So is love. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. And strive to be a reflection of what you want to receive.”

If you weren't in health care, what would you like to be doing?

If I wasn’t in healthcare, I’d probably be a life coach or nutritionist!
