Meet Kayla Portwood Luker

Nurse Practitioner

Kayla has clinical interests in the nonoperative management of acute orthopedic injuries and chronic orthopedic conditions.

Where are you from?

St. Louis, born and raised!

What made you choose orthopedics as a specialty?

There are a multitude of acute and chronic orthopedic conditions so the learning opportunities are endless.

What brought you to Washington University Orthopedics?

I love the inter-professional collaboration throughout the department. It feels like one big team working together, which is really unique for a large organization.

What aspect of your practice do you find most interesting or rewarding?

Orthopedic conditions can be debilitating if not diagnosed or managed appropriately so I enjoy using up-to-date treatment guidelines and collaboration with colleagues to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I love trivia nights and live music, especially outdoors when the weather is nice.

If you weren't a nurse practitioner, what would you like to be doing?

Something with international travel. I love traveling and experiencing different cultures. We haven't been out of the country since the pandemic, but I look forward to planning our next trip. Our most recent vacation was to Hawaii.

Anything else you would like to share?

I have a one year old son and my husband John is also a WUSTL nurse practitioner. He works in critical care for the department of anesthesia.
