Meet Marquitta Prophete
Assistant Clinical Supervisor
Where are you from?
Born and raised in St. Louis! Originally from the south side of St. Louis city, my family moved to University City when I was five, and to Florissant when I was 13. I've lived in Florissant ever since.
What brought you to Washington University Orthopedics?
I started working at WashU the September after graduating high school in Biostatistics. I was an office clerk and moved up to an Administrative Assistant. In that time, I also worked in Neurology, doing data entry for an Alzheimer’s study. After leaving WashU, I told myself that I would make my way back some day. I loved the environment and meeting people from various backgrounds.
I worked a few different places, mainly in customer service after leaving. My job before WashU Ortho was at Receivable Solutions Inc. The office was across the highway from the Orthopedic Clinic in Chesterfield, and I remember my sister needing to go due to a shoulder injury while she played basketball. When I was looking for a different job, the building made me think about applying to and getting back into WashU. Probably the best decision I’ve ever made.
How do you support the department?
My team and I are responsible for making sure documents are properly placed into patients charts. Everything from therapy notes, FMLA, orders, and surgery consent forms are sent to us for proper placement and easy finding.
What aspect of your work do you find most interesting or rewarding?
What really interests me about my job is seeing just how many patients the department treats on a daily basis and the story that each of those patients tell. Everyone is so different, and it's interesting to see the different treatments that can be provided to help them, which is also rewarding. Being able to see not only the clinical part, but just how much goes on behind the scenes to help make sure those patients are being properly cared for. No matter how small, I love that I can be a part of helping people feel better.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I love so many things that I don’t have a favorite! I love to cook, I love cleaning, and I love sports! My favorite sports is football and I’m a Ravens fan. I can watch anything that’s on!
What's the best advice you ever received?
My grandma used to always tell me that I will never be too old to learn something new. I love learning new things and I can master anything I put my mind to. For a long time, I didn’t know my career path, so I never went to college. It wasn’t until last year that I started school and decided on Healthcare Management to begin that journey. My grandmas words played a big part in that decision. I hope I made her proud.
If you weren't in health care, what would you like to be doing?
I have always wanted to have my own restaurant; I love cooking. Now instead of a restaurant, I would like a food truck. I would name it Nancy’s Kitchen in honor of my grandma, the best cook I’ve ever known.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I am the third oldest and the eldest girl of nine kids. All of my siblings names start with "Ma-," and "A" for a middle name. We are "The Prophete" kids! Mark Anthony, Marcus Allen, Marquitta Ann, Maurice Andreas, Marie Antoinett, Marquis Antonio, Mariah Angelica, Martez Alexander and Martin Andrew.
I have two twin nieces and a nephew, along with two step-nephews and a step-niece. I’m so big on family and I absolutely adore my siblings more than anything. I was also very bossy and like the second mom in the house (my dad has been calling me ‘mama’ since I was a baby!), so watching them become the tremendous people they are has been wonderful to witness. I love helping people, I try to be supportive of anything anyone wants to do. I also genuinely love to see people happy. I wish I could make everyone happy!
