Meet Kathy Bradley

Patient Services Administrator

Where are you from?

I was born in Kansas, but moved to St. Charles when I was eight years old, after my dad retired from the Army.

What brought you to Washington University Orthopedics?

Chance! I had been working as an MA for about 10 years for another orthopedic group and decided to make a change. I went to work for Boeing and had been there for about six weeks when I received a call from the business manager who got my name from someone. They were looking for a Medical Assistant for Dr. Shively. I actually turned them down the first time, but they were persistent. That was 33 years ago! I took another "break" from 2001 - 2007. I celebrated 15 years back with the department in September.

What aspect of your work do you find most interesting or rewarding?

I really enjoy learning about orthopedics. I was fortunate to work with some really fantastic physicians/teachers who taught me a lot. It's very rewarding to know that we help guide patients on their healthcare journey. Many of whom are calling our department for the first time, and really have no idea what's wrong with them or who they should see. We are able to help them try to figure that out. I also find that in my current role, being able to mentor staff is a huge part of what I do. I truly enjoy being able to do that, and to share some of what I have learned over the years. I just love the people.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I enjoy just spending time with my family. My grandchildren are both very active in sports. My husband Tony and I love to watch them play, whatever the sport! My children and grandchildren just make me happy. They are all amazing and I am incredibly proud of them.

What's the best advice you ever received?

I've received a lot of great advice. There are two things that really stuck with me. The first came from a patient at my very first job in the cafeteria of a hospital. I had an unhappy customer tell me to "Never forget, I pay your salary." To this day, I don't know what I did wrong, but the statement resonated with me, and I always try to remember that. The second piece of advice I received from a manager. Her advice was "Never be just a follower. Be a leader and choose your own path." That advice has served me pretty well.

If you weren't in health care, what would you like to be doing?
My original plan was to be a teacher. I think I would have enjoyed that. Certainly, I would like the hours!

Anything else you’d like to share?

I am the youngest of five children. My husband Tony and I celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary in August. We have four kids, two grandchildren, and two crazy Ausie dogs. I love all kinds of music and enjoy sitting outside and relaxing on my patio when the weather allows.
