Meet Madelyn Curry, BSN

Clinical Nurse Coordinator

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in St. Louis. When I graduated high school from Nerinx Hall, I left only to attend the University of Tulsa for nursing school and came back home to work at Barnes Hospital.

What brought you to Washington University Orthopedics?

I was working in Barnes Hospital’s operating room, when an opportunity was presented to me to work with Dr. Clohisy in research. After a brief stint in research, I transitioned to being his clinical nurse coordinator. That was 20 years ago this past September!

What aspect of your work do you find most interesting or rewarding?

There are so many aspects, and it is hard to choose, but what has been very interesting is how orthopedics has changed so much from the time I was a nurse on the floor (1985) taking care of total hip patients for example. They would be admitted 2 days before surgery, stay for 2 weeks afterwards, then go to rehab for 2 more weeks. Now, many go home night of surgery and if not by the next day! What has been most rewarding is working with a world-renowned surgeon, taking care of his patients, and being an integral part of the growth of the practice. I have been fortunate to work with so many different people in all aspects, who all have been a part of my professional and personal growth.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

My husband and I spend a lot of time together from dining out to playing golf and everything else in between! I especially love enjoying time spent with family and friends.

What's the best advice you ever received?

“If you always tell the truth, you know what you said!”

If you weren't in health care, what would you like to be doing?

Working as a police detective.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I have been married to a wonderful man, Jim, for almost 36 years. We have been blessed with three children of whom I am most proud! We also have 10 year old Wheaton Terrier, Willie! We love to travel, this year we spent a week at the beach with just my immediate family which brought me such joy!
