Is 2022 your year to pick an orthopedic residency program? There's a lot to know about programs and you can find out a wealth of information during the interview process and social exchanges. If you're wondering about some of our resident's personal thoughts, current resident, Dr. Maria Schwabe, shared details why WashU is the choice for her!

What type of resident thrives at WashU?

“WashU Ortho residents pride ourselves on working hard, working as a team, and working with compassion. Residents who are eager to learn and be challenged from day 1 of residency tend to thrive at WashU. More importantly, we are a team here, and not only support each other at work, but also outside of work. For me, the WashU ortho residents are some of my best friends and I couldn't imagine going through residency without them. If you want a hard-working, well-trained program with great support and great friends, this is the place to be.

What are the relationships like with faculty at WashU?

“The WashU Orthopedic faculty are amazing! Many of them are nationally-recognized,  accomplished leaders in their field and are fantastic surgeons and teachers. I have established great relationships with numerous faculty members as a medical student and now as a resident. Not only do they go out of their way to help me build my career, but they also take an interest in me as a person. I am lucky to be trained by such great faculty, and great people, here at WashU.

What do you love about St. Louis?

“Many things! St. Louis is a great place to live, especially as a busy resident. It is very affordable and an easy place to live. I particularly enjoy the nearby hiking trails, local wineries, the great restaurants/coffee shops, Forest Park, and the Fox Theater. There is something for everyone in St. Louis!
