Does Sports Specialization Give You an Edge?

Science of Blues Hockey

Is it better for youth athletes to play multiple sports, or to specialize in just one? In this episode of The Science of Blues Hockey, Washington University Orthopedics pediatric sports medicine specialist Kayla Daniel, MD, and host Chris Pronger unpack the benefits of being a multi-sport athlete.

Dr. Daniel shares helpful tips to keep in mind when it comes to young athlete's training.

  1. Rest is important. In addition to one month off per year, one day off from training each week should be part of the training routine.
  2. The number of training hours per week shouldn't exceed the age of the athlete. 10-year-olds shouldn't train over 10 hours a week.
  3. Focus on the ABCS of training for well-rounded athleticism and injury prevention: Ability, Balance, Coordination, Speed
