Meet Ndeye Guisse, MD, PGY-5 

2025 Chief Resident 

Where are you from? 

I’m from Senegal, West Africa but grew up in Cincinnati, OH. Fun fact about Senegal is that it is known as the “country of hospitality” hence why I love hosting people.  

What made you choose orthopedics as a specialty? 

I chose orthopedics because of its hands-on nature and ability to impact patient’s lives in a functional way. I also love how much of a team sport ortho is – we have so much to learn from each other.

Do you plan on pursuing a subspecialty area of focus? 

Yes – I'm headed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia next year for a pediatric orthopedics fellowship! 

Why WashU?

WashU was described to me as a “surgeons’ school” and I see why. Before anything, clinical excellence and surgical skill are the top priority here and that what I sought out in a residency program.

Is there a patient who had a lasting impact on you?

All the resilient and bright kids I met while on my mission trip to Barbados. Their sole objective was to get back on their feet which makes caring for them all the more rewarding.

What's the best advice you've ever received? 

The best advice I have ever received was to stay true to myself, trust God’s plan and always give my best. Sounds simple but can be challenging.

What's your favorite thing to do outside of work? 

Anything that involves food and people… literally.

If you weren't a physician, what would you like to be doing? 

I would probably have some sort of food business with lots of traveling to and from Senegal. I’d also work with folks back home to improve access to tertiary care.
