Meet Laura Meyer
Workers Compensation Program Administrator
Where are you from?
I grew up about 15 minutes south of St. Louis.
What made you choose health care as a profession?
I went into the healthcare field right out of high school. I started working on the Med/Surg floor in a hospital and eventually moved to a private orthopedic practice. I’ve worked in orthopedics for over 15 years now and I’ve always loved learning all things medical!
What brought you to Washington University Orthopedics?
Prior to working here, I worked in a small orthopedic office in Festus, MO. After working there a couple of years, a good friend of mine reached out to let me know that they were interviewing people to support an incoming foot and ankle provider. I applied for that job and worked with Jeremy McCormick, MD, for the next nine years before moving into my current work comp role.
What is workers’ compensation? How is it different from traditional care paths?
Workers compensation is a type of coverage that offers benefits and wage coverage for a person who has been injured on the job. My role within the workers’ compensation office is to be the direct contact between the work comp carrier and the orthopedic provider. The purpose of this role is to keep an open line of communication and form a relationship with the work comp adjusters and nurse case managers. Orthopedics is the only department at WashU that has designated work comp coordinators. We are often told that adjusters and nurse case managers love our program!
What's your favorite thing to do outside of work?
When I’m not at work, my family and I enjoy doing just about anything outdoors. We swim in our pool, hike, and fish. We also love to take rides on our side by side at the family farm.
If you weren't in healthcare, what would you like to be doing?
If I were not in health care I think I would be a crime scene investigator or a detective. I’m a real crime junkie!
Anything else you’d like to share?
My husband Ryan and I have been married 17 years. We have 4 children; Gavin who will be 16 in October, Ella who just turned 12, Rowan just turned eight, and Marlo just turned four. We also have our family pet, Ruger.
