Vascular Disease or Circulatory Disturbances in the Hand

Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or certain types of arthritis can suffer from decreased circulation to their fingers and thumb. Symptoms may include pain, white or blue discoloration especially in the cold, or numbness and tingling of the fingertips. This is a potentially serious condition, and should be evaluated by an orthopedic hand surgeon. Diagnosis is made by physical examination and evaluation of blood flow through the hand and fingers by means of ultrasound, other non-invasive tests or even an angiogram. Often, treatment can be non-operative, with medications taken by mouth or applied directly to the hand. On occasion, surgery is required in order to restore blood flow.
