Ganglion Cysts and Tumors of the Hand and Wrist

A ganglion is a fluid filled cyst that can occur anywhere on the fingers, hand or wrist. Not every 'bump' is a ganglion: on occasion, benign tumors of the fingers, hand or wrist can mimic these benign cysts. It is important that these tumors (also benign the majority of times) are diagnosed and treated appropriately, so that more extensive surgical treatment can be avoided in the future. Most common locations of these cysts are just under the cuticle, over the back of the wrist and at the location where the fingers join the hand. It is important to be evaluated by an orthopedic hand surgeon, even though surgery for this condition might not be required or advisable in some cases.
