Hip Preservation Experience

Pediatric orthopaedic fellows have a very unique opportunity to participate in the high volume, comprehensive hip preservation clinical service at Washington University. This collaborative service cares for a wide variety of hip conditions from simple to complex and is the largest such referral center in the Midwest. Hip faculty Jeffrey Nepple, MD, Perry Schoenecker, MD, and John Clohisy, MD, are involved in the care of hip pathology secondary to femoroacetabular impingement, acetabular dysplasia, SCFE, residual Perthes disease, and other causes in both young adolescents and adults. Patients are evaluated and treated at several location including St. Louis Children’s Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital Specialty Care Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Fellows are able to learn a comprehensive spectrum of hip preservation techniques including hip arthroscopy, surgical hip dislocation, femoral osteotomy, and periacetabular osteotomy. Fellows regularly rotate with Drs. Nepple and Schoenecker and can electively work alongside Dr. Clohisy in obtaining exposure to all aspects of joint preservation surgical care. Education on young adult hip disorders is emphasized a variety of formats. A fellow-focused young adult hip multidisciplinary conference occurs monthly and includes involvement from pediatric, reconstruction, and sports medicine faculty and fellows, as well as expertise from radiology, physiatry, and physical therapy. Cadaveric labs focused on hip arthroscopy and open hip surgical techniques occur throughout the year tofurther develop surgical skills. The St. Louis Hip Course, co-directed by Dr. Clohisy and Nepple, occurs in the winter and brings national leaders to St. Louis for the premier open and arthroscopic skills course in the nation. Washington University serves as the coordinating site for the ANCHOR multicenter study group. Extensive research opportunities are available for fellows interested.
