Neuromuscular Disorders Experience

Pediatric orthopedic fellows will be exposed to orthopedic care of a variety of neuromuscular conditions. Due to the expertise available at Washington University, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children–St. Louis, St. Louis is an international destination for children requiring care for neuromuscular conditions. The experience in neuromuscular orthopedics during fellowship include the following:

  • Multidisciplinary cerebral palsy and myelomeningocele clinics: Fellows will participate in evaluation, decision making, and follow up care of children with cerebral palsy and spina bifida in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Operative experience: Fellows will have ample opportunity to participate in hip reconstructive procedures, single event multi-level surgery, and foot reconstructive procedures in children with a variety of neuromuscular disorders.
  • Gait analysis laboratory: The new motion analysis laboratory at St. Louis Children’s Hospital will be available to fellows who are interested in learning more about gait analysis. Fellows will participate in gait analysis evaluation and treatment planning.  
  • Neuromuscular journal club: A neuromuscular journal club every is held every 6-8 weeks to supplement fellows education in neuromuscular conditions.
