Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship 

The purpose of the Fellowship is to develop a comprehensive experience into the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to the upper extremity with an emphasis on shoulder and elbow disorders.

The fellowship includes the participation in the care of patients in the private office practice of the attending surgeons, assisting in the operating room and performing surgery under the direction of the upper extremity surgery attending staff, supervising resident surgery activities, and contributing to the overall educational program. The Fellow can anticipate a reasonable amount of independent activities in terms of conducting weekly adult upper extremity clinics and operating on emergency cases commensurate with the level of training and ability. Standard educational activities include a weekly anatomical dissection program, journal club, and interactive upper extremity conferences. Multiple basic, transitional, and clinical research opportunities are available; participation in on-going projects has been encouraged and has generally resulted in excellent academic productivity.

The Fellow is a member of the Orthopaedic faculty at Washington University School of Medicine with an appointment as an Instructor. All fellows within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery must be eligible for work within the United States as well as a permanent Missouri medical license, BNDD and DEA. The shoulder and elbow experience is anticipated to be extensive, with over 500-600 cases per year being performed. Approximately 80% of the cases are shoulder and 20% are elbow. Operative experience includes a significant percentage of arthroscopic procedures as well as advanced arthroplasty cases.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery enjoys prominence and respect within the hospital, medical school, the city of St. Louis and the surrounding areas of Missouri and Illinois. We are the team physicians for the St. Louis Blues, St. Louis CITY SC, and the Washington University athletic teams.
