Orthopedic Minute - Back Pain

Transcript:

Time for another Orthopedic Minute presented by Washington University Physicians.

Hi, I'm Jacob Buchowski. I'm a physician at Washington University and when I see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for evaluation of low back pain and leg pain, I first do a history and physical examination. I essentially try to find out how much back pain a patient has and how much leg pain they have and depending on those answers and my physical examination findings, I typically will first prescribe a nonoperative treatment program. That program will consist typically of physical therapy, medications and occasionally, when necessary, injections.

Surgery is typically reserved for cases in which patients have no improvement with the nonoperative treatment. Thankfully, with advances in technologies in our surgical techniques, often, those surgeries can be performed in a minimally invasive manner.
