Munish Gupta, MD, Washington University’s Mildred B. Simon distinguished professor of orthopedic surgery, and Michael Kelly, MD, then a Washington University associate professor of orthopedic surgery, were among the authors awarded the Russell A. Hibbs Best Clinical Research Paper Award during the fifty-sixth Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Annual Meeting in September, 2021.

The winning manuscript, “Comparison of Patient Factors (Frailty) vs. Surgical Factors (Invasiveness) for Optimization of 2-year Cost-Utility: We Should Focus on the Patient Factors,” suggests that to improve cost-utility, surgeons should focus on improving modifiable patient factors.

The SRS is recognized as the world’s premier spine deformity society, focusing on providing medical education for healthcare professionals and supporting research in spinal deformities.

The Program Committee selects nominees for the awards from the SRS Annual Meeting abstract submissions. Nominees are invited to submit their manuscripts for review. The Program Committee selects the final winners considering popular votes and manuscript scores.

Gupta and Kelly were also both elected to the 2021-2022 SRS Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting in St. Louis.
