New faces are popping up at Washington University Orthopedics, and one of them is Derrick Melton.
Derrick joined our clinical team January 2021 as Senior Director of Clinical Operations. He came to WashU Orthopedics from University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, MS, where he was the Director of Ambulatory Operations for their Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
While he misses his friends and family back in Mississippi, he’s eager to learn more about his new working team and new city. “I look forward to working with great people and having a positive impact in any way that I can. I can’t wait to learn the culture of St. Louis, and to experience a city with professional sports teams.”
When Derrick is not working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife Lashay, and their three children, Natya (18), Derrick (11) and Skylar (4), are a sports family. “We have one kid in college (Xavier University in New Orleans), one in youth sports, and one mini-dancer (and professional alphabet-reciter!).” Derrick also enjoys traveling, reading, exercising (running, CrossFit, riding bikes), fishing, playing basketball and playing golf. In fact, he said he would be a sports agent or financial advisor if he were not in health care.
Clinical care careers are demanding, but so worthwhile. In asking Derrick what aspect of his work he finds most rewarding, he shared, “Being a resource for others, and being able to participate in projects geared towards helping and advocating for underserved people and their communities.”
Welcome to the Washington University Orthopedics team, Derrick, and welcome to St. Louis!
