Research faculty Farshid Guilak, PhD, and Linda Sandell, PhD, were recognized at the 2016 Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) meeting held in Amsterdam.

Dr. Guilak was awarded with the Basic Science Research Award for his advancement in basic research in the field of osteoarthritis. Dr. Guilak is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and the Director of Research for Shriners Hospitals for Children - St. Louis. He is also the co-director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine and has appointments in the Departments of Developmental Biology and Biomedical Engineering. His laboratory is pursuing a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, as a basis for the development of new pharmacologic and stem-cell therapies. Dr. Sandell was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, for devoting most of her career to the advancement of the science associated with osteoarthritis. Dr. Sandell is the Mildred B. Simon Research Professor, Director of Research and Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Research at Washington University School of Medicine. Her laboratory focuses on gene regulation of extracellular matrix proteins and its influence on the phenotype of cells.
