Arthritis of the Hand

Patients both young and old may have pain and decreased motion within a joint of the fingers or the thumb because of arthritis. Most commonly, this arthritis is a result of wear-and-tear of the joint through the course of daily life and work, but it can also be due to inflammation, infection or trauma. The diagnosis of finger or thumb arthritis is usually made with an x-ray, and treatment can be as simple as oral medications to decrease pain or inflammation. If simple measures do not control pain and improve function, then hand surgery to replace the damaged joint may be helpful in restoring motion and decreasing pain.
