As an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Johnson served an internship at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco. He then practiced Family Medicine in Sandstone, Minnesota. He served an orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in his hometown of Rochester, Minnesota. Following residency, he was a fellow in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Texas, Houston, under the direction of Donald E. Baxter, M.D. He entered private orthopaedic practice in Milwaukee before joining the full-time faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In 1989 he was appointed director of the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program which graduates four fellows per year. Dr. Johnson joined the Washington University faculty at his current position in 1997.
