Washington University Orthopedics strongly believes in treating patients in the most optimal setting. The vast majority of surgical procedures for hand and wrist problems are performed on an outpatient basis.
The most common procedures performed by our specialists are: arthroscopic surgery of the hand and wrist, carpal tunnel release, cubital tunnel release, tennis elbow surgery, trigger finger, ganglion excision, excision of benign hand tumors, deQuervains and tendonitis surgery, Dupuytren’s contracture release, thumb arthritis surgery, fracture fixation of the hand and wrist, and repair of tendon, nerve and vessel injuries.
Physicians who specialize in microsurgery as well as reconstructive surgery of the hand and wrist – including brachial plexus surgery – are adept at reconstructions of both congenital and acquired hand deformities including radial club hand and thumb deficiencies. In addition, they use vascularized growth plate transplants for the restoration of growth to children’s limbs traumatized by injury, infection, or cancer surgery.
Replantation surgery, total joint replacement of the hand and wrist, and surgery to correct children’s deformities usually require a short stay in hospital. Rehabilitation services are readily available for in both inpatient and outpatient settings and focus on rapidly returning a patient to maximum mobility and function.
