Treatment Approach

Foot and AnkleOur dedicated team of professionals is skilled in advanced surgical techniques, with many procedures performed on an outpatient basis and followed with an individualized rehabilitation program. To optimize rapid recovery, arthroscopy of the foot and ankle is performed when possible. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that enables orthopedic surgeons to both view and then repair or correct orthopedic problems through only a small incision.

In addition to arthroscopy, our foot and ankle specialists are adept at using shockwave therapy, a non-invasive method for treating chronic heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis. For accurate diagnosis and ongoing treatment of arthritic or painful joints, x-rays help physicians to pinpoint specific areas for localized injections of anesthetic and cortisone.

The multi-disciplinary approach at Washington University Orthopedics enables patients to receive comprehensive care in the most appropriate settings. A certified orthotist is available to create custom braces to help straighten or correct misaligned joints. A pedorthotist certified in the design and fabrication of shoes and shoe inserts also is part of our team.

Washington University Orthopedics offers patients on-location rehabilitative services with board-certified physiatrists on staff. Physiatrists specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation of a wide array of problems affecting the musculoskeletal system. Therapists and nurses also are part of the rehabilitation team. The majority of foot and ankle rehabilitation occurs in an outpatient setting and is focused on regaining range of motion, strengthening of the foot and ankle, and correcting gait problems. Patients are taught proper exercises for their feet and may be given a custom orthotic to enhance recovery and rehabilitation. Ultrasound, ice massage, or other therapy may be used to help manage pain.
