The Chief Resident (PGY-4 on the hand surgical service) is responsible for directing the care of all hand surgery inpatients on the hospital wards. This includes obtaining the necessary preoperative tests and making the appropriate postoperative decisions. The Chief keeps the admitting hand surgeon informed of the patient’s progress.
Sign-off to the Head Nurse of the Orthopedic Ward is done every morning to streamline patient care and allow resident and fellows the opportunity to focus on attainment of knowledge and experience, rather than the performance of hospital “housekeeping” chores.
