Timeline

1899: Orthopaedic surgery is established as a discipline at Washington University.

1899: Aaron Steele, one of the first orthopaedists west of the Allegheny Mountains to limit his practice to the specialty, is named first chairman.

1912: Nathaniel Allison is named chairman.

1914: Washington University School of Medicine affiliates with Barnes Hospital.

1915: St. Louis Children’s Hospital relocates to land adjacent to the medical school.

1917: Nathaniel Allison begins term as a co-editor of the American Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery.

1918: The name Washington University School of Medicine is officially adopted.

1920-23: Nathaniel Allison serves as both dean of the School of Medicine and chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery.

1922: Nathaniel Allison is elected president of the AOA.

1923: St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children locates on the medical campus.

1924: Leroy Abbott becomes chairman.

1926: J. Albert Key is recruited as director of research at St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

1930: J. Albert Key is named chairman. He serves until 1955.

 

1945: Residency training in orthopaedic surgery is established at Washington University.

1946: J. Albert Key serves as president of the AOA.

1947: Leroy Abbott becomes president of the AOA.

1955: Fred C. Reynolds becomes chairman. He serves until 1972.

1958: H.R. McCarroll is elected president of the AAOS.

1960: Fred C. Reynolds is named president of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society.

1965: Fred C. Reynolds is elected president of the AAOS.

Late 1960s: John Cochran VA Hospital affiliates with the department’s educational program.

 

1972: The annual H.R. McCarroll lectureship is established.

 

1983: The Fred C. Reynolds Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery is established.

1995: The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is formally established as a department of the School of Medicine.

1995: Richard H. Gelberman is named chairman of the newly established department.

1996: Barnes Hospital and the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis merge to become Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Since the merger, the hospital has consistently been listed among the nation’s best.

2001: Richard Gelberman becomes president of the AAOS.

2007: Washington University Orthopedics opens new 60,000 ft Outpatient Orthopedic Facility in Chesterfield.
