Clinical Interests

Dr. Riew's practice is limited to the operative treatment of cervical spine disorders in adults, including degenerative, traumatic, neoplastic and inflammatory etiologies such as ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis. He performs between 250-300 cervical spine operations each year.

Research Interests

Enhancement of bone healing, effect of medications on bone healing, selective nerve root blocks for avoidance of surgery.

Background

Dr. Riew received his undergraduate training from Harvard College and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1984. He is double boarded in Internal Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery. He trained under Dr. Henry Bohlman, a world-renowned pioneer in cervical spine surgery. He has been at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for 12 years and has established one of the largest cervical spine surgery practices in the world. In 2006 he established the Orthopaedic Institute for Cervical Spine Surgery, one of the first of its kind in the world, dedicated to the treatment of cervical spine disorders.
