Background
Dr. Sandell received her undergraduate education at the University of Denver, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1980. She did her postdoctoral work under Dr. Albert Dorfman at the University of Chicago. Before joining the Department in 1997, she was Professor in the Departments of Orthopaedics and Biochemistry at the University of Washington, and Career Research Scientist at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, such as the Kappa Delta Award for Outstanding Research in Musculoskeletal Biology from the American Academy of Orthopaedics Surgeons, and Outstanding Scientist Award from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and is a Basic Science Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. She also has served a term as President of the Orthopaedic Research Society from 1999-2000. Sandell is the author or co-author of numerous scientific articles, book chapters, and books. She is a member of the Advisory council of the NIH National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (NIAMS) and has served as chairman of two Gordon Conferences, Collagen and Bioengineering and Orthopaedic Science. She is Deputy Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Associate Editor of the Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, and Editorial Board Member of Calcified Tissue International.
